When a vacancy arises in the sleepy Cornish hamlet of Portwenn, Dr Martin Ellingham jumps at the chance, but later realises that adjusting to village life is not going to be plain sailing. In his sharp suits and flashy car, Martin is like a fish out of water, and his brusque manner does not go down too well with some of the locals.

But Bert's plans look to be scuppered when Martin finds himself treating a host of patients with suspected food poisoning on the day after opening night. Sam Oakwood has come down with something, and when Martin finds that Mrs Averill's cat has been staying with him, he realises where they both got TB.

Louisa's first Skype call for her course does not go as planned when Martin decides to intervene. Someone breaks into the school - nothing is stolen, but photographs have been torn up. Caitlin seems to be after more than just a hand from Bert at the shop.

Louisa's mother Eleanor catches up with her old school friend Paul, a local fisherman, who takes her out on a date.

Mrs Tishell seems to be having a delayed onset of mourning. Al receives a large whiskey order, but when he tries to put the still together he has to ask Bert for help. Louisa has problems at school with Toby, who is Angela Sim's nephew.

The fed-up medic manages to palm Buddy off onto Angela the vet, but it's not long before they meet again. Elsewhere, Ruth learns Bert's secret, Penhale tries to ask Janice out, and Clive gives his marriage another go.

Meanwhile, the parents of a boy who fell ill following a visit to Aunt Joan's farm hold her responsible for his condition and threaten to sue her, and a newly widowed woman tells Martin that she is seeing visions of her dead husband.

Martin's parents, Christopher and Margaret, make an unexpected visit to Cornwall to stay with their son - but they have not spoken for seven years, and the true nature of their visit is revealed when Martin takes them to see Aunt Joan, Christopher's sister. There is a surprise in store for Portwenn Primary's school secretary.

Comedy-drama series. Martin does not take kindly to the influx of holidaymakers in Portwenn - and his attempts to point out the dangers of sunbathing to one woman does not go over very well. Gossip spreads about Martin's phobia of blood and he becomes the subject of a practical joke in the pub. One of Louisa's pupils has an accident and an ambulance has to be called to take him to Truro for emergency treatment. On the way there, Martin reveals the reason behind his fear.

Bert's restaurant is in financial trouble and Al decides that it is time to take action.

James starts biting - not only Louisa, but his classmates. Louisa joins a lift scheme with a classmate on her course. Morwenna takes Al away to a glamping site, leaving Emily to help out at the surgery. Al is nervous about leaving Bert running the pub, but soon has problems of his own.

Light-hearted drama. Martin disagrees with the holistic approach to care advocated by the village's midwife and is incensed when her advice to Louisa results in an adverse reaction. Bert is smitten with the restaurant's new cook but is devastated to learn that she has a husband. Edith has dinner with consultant Robert Dashwood and tells Martin that he will be receiving some good news about the London job. Aunt Joan thinks Martin needs to inform Louisa about his plans to move on.

In an effort to get Maggie to stay in Portwenn after she gets the all-clear, PC Joe Penhale tries to prove that he is the man for her - and even engineers situations where he can show off his macho side to impress her. But will his attempts at subterfuge work? Martin steps in when school caretaker Mr Coley becomes muddled and puts the children of the school at risk. Tensions mount between Martin and Louisa as they find themselves unable to agree on anything, from schooling for their son to what to have for dinner.

Morwenna needs to find a replacement rower after Eric dislocates his finger. One of Martin's patients passes out during a consultation, causing Martin to pass out as well. Louisa hands in her resignation letter and Mel goes to see Martin about concerns over her husband's drinking. Martin and Louisa arrive home to find Chris Parsons waiting for them.

Tommy is driving the heavily pregnant Louisa to a routine hospital appointment - and Martin realises that she may be in serious danger.
