Istanbul’s in danger! Two tectonic plates are rubbing against each other right outside the city on the Bosphorus with its population of 14 million. There have been serious seismic shocks along this fault line since 1939 and the quakes are moving inexorably towards Istanbul. The next major seismic shock could hit the city itself. But when? And how bad will it be? Professor Marco Bohnhoff from the GFZ, the German Geo Research Center in Potsdam, wants to install a new type of sensor a hundred meters below ground, as close to the earthquake zone as possible. He believes that the tectonic plates have become jammed right outside the city. If the pressure becomes too great, they will sunder with a huge bang – a horrific scenario. But will it really come to that? The new sensors deliver data with a hitherto unseen accuracy, and the first soundings seem to confirm all the worst fears.
